PATHWAYS

The San Francisco Bay Area is a global center of innovation and industry. If it were a country, the Bay Area would be the 19th largest economy in the world, with a gross domestic product of $748 billion (Bay Area Council, 2018). The region’s Fortune 500 companies span industries such as financials/insurance, media and telecom, energy, consumer products, biotechnology, and high technology, with a concentration of scientific and technology jobs across sectors.

The collaborative will accelerate pathway development and expansion in four sectors key to the Bay Area economy: Business Management, Education, Engineering and Healthcare with attention to multidisciplinary STEM components in each sector.

EDUCATION

Expected retirements in the teaching profession and the Bay Area’s growing population are increasing opportunities for creative, social people who enjoy working with students of all ages. Eighty percent of TK-12 districts in California need teachers, according to the Learning Policy Institute (2018). Bay Area K-16 programs strive to create a seamless pathway for students to earn education certificates, creating a smooth transition to teaching experience for those pursuing advanced studies or seeking immediate employment in the field.

ENGINEERING

Occupations in engineering have a projected 9% job growth in California, which is 3% higher than the United States as a whole. The Bay Area projects a need for 1,544 engineering technicians with associate degrees annually in engineering occupations (electrical engineering technicians, electro-mechanical technicians, industrial engineering technicians, mechanical engineering technicians, and all other engineering technicians). Bay Area community colleges produce on average 519 graduates with degrees or certificates in engineering-related occupations annually, leaving a potential pipeline gap of 1,000 positions. In the San Francisco-Redwood City-South San Francisco subregion, software developers remain one of the fastest growing occupations (37% change projected from 2018-2028). Average annual earnings in engineering: $66,452 with an Associate degree or some college; $113,159 with a bachelor’s degree.

HEALTHCARE

In the East Bay, the healthcare industry is one of the fastest-growing sectors, attracting employees who enjoy helping others and working in fast-paced, team environments. The trend is expected to continue over the next decade, driven by the region’s increasing general population, the need for care of aging individuals, and the demand for preventative services. Nationwide, demand is expected to increase 12% for registered nurses and 23% for medical assistants by 2030, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
